Work

In work, the most important thing is communication.

In a book I read the other day, there was the story of a woman who worked behind the cash register at a supermarket. This woman, no matter what the job, could not persevere in work, no matter what the assignment was. Now, three months into her job as a cashier, the job began to seem unpleasant and she started to worry about whether or not she should quit. It was at this point that the woman remembered being young and, although she disliked it, she studied very hard and learned to play the piano even without looking at the music. Remembering this process, she decided to stick with her job as a cashier and, trying a little harder, to talk to her customers as she rang up their purchases. After she did this, no matter if the registers next to hers were open, customers waited in line at this woman’s register. Even announcements stating which lanes were open had no effect: customers would simply respond, “We want to talk to her so we will wait in line.”

After reading this story, I understood that people shop not simply because they want a product. Rather, they are searching for people with whom they can talk face-to-face and who know and understand them. Life depends on those around you for it is people who are the heart of life.

It is said that those who persevere will prevail. For example, continuing at a company for three years involves study and perseverance. Although there is also the question of the influence of the company president and leaders, I think it is also important for parents to take a firm stand and to train their children to work for the same company for at least three years.

For their first three years at a company, new employees are adorable babies who are raised in the home (the company), are taught at school (training workshops, etc.), and are refined in their regional community groups.

In a recent daily report, one of my employees realized after watching his colleague’s warm approach and heartfelt apology toward a frustrated customer that his own response was not as it could be and that he wanted to watch and learn from this other employee. It is true that people are mirrors and I hope that we can look around at each other and, noticing the good points of each other, work to emulate those as we continue to grow in our work.
