Exertion is Common

February is already here. Throughout the majority of January, I was away on business trips which meant that I was unable to see what was going on in the development lines. This month, however, aside from a week-long study session, I will be here, walking through the lines, observing and communication with the employees.

During the past few business trips, I was able to visit many companies and meet many people, affording me an opportunity for which I am very grateful. One of these visits afforded me the opportunity to each with a the exec of the company. This company is not only representative of Japan but also shows an increase in revenue every year. This particular exec, himself 53 years old, told me that in these many years he has never taken days off back to back. He said that he and the company execs begin meetings at the office at 7am, looking at all the spots of sale across Japan. Hearing that, I realized how hard he was working. Those who are truly working to the best of their ability do not believe that they are doing so. For them, such action is cmmonplace. It was there that I felt the difference between this exeuctive and myself. The question of whether or not you are working to the best of your ability is not something that can be answered by you. It is something that is decided by those around you. If managers work hard, the employees will all feel a sense of reliefand will be able to handle their work. The structure of JIT is one of an upside down pyramid with me in the bottom position. Burdens increase only as the number of people increase. This is common.

Routine action and exertion will not betray you. The minute someone thinks to himself, “I’m really working hard,” his exertion ends. Move by your own power, see through your own eyes, study, and talk with people at the scene. The level of exertion at Japan’s top companies is different.

Today four new employees began working at JIT. Out of the 100 people interviewed, these four were chosen. Although some of the applicants are introduced to me by those I know, the selection of personnel is entrusted entirely to the head of the personnel department. Rejections were made after careful consideration for the future of JIT and the happiness of all its employees.

I ask that the seniors teach those beneath them the JIT culture: greetings, responses, cleaning, and punctuality. JIT is a company that raises employees who, as people, are able to complete commonplace things. We value the completion of a person over the completion of a job. Please be reliable in the everyday things and act in ways that the new employees can immitate.

The cold days continue but, without losing to the cold, work as hard as you can to create a good product.
